Rigour and Thought Experiments: Burgess and Norton

چکیده
This article discusses the important and influential views of John Burgess on nature mathematical rigour Norton thought experiments. Their accounts turn out to be surprisingly similar in spite different subject matters. Among other things both require a reconstruction initial proof or experiment order officially evaluate them, even though we almost never do this practice. The each are plausible seem solve interesting problems. However, have problems would not able justice some examples. They fail ways. More pluralistic could embrace aspects each, while rejecting their claims universality. An ideal account (not provided here) contribute explanation understanding as well evidence. These topics for future work.

On Possibilities and Thought Experiments∗
This paper concerns two related recent books by Nicholas Rescher, Imagining Irreality on possibilities and What If? on thought experiments—see [23] and [24]. The books are related because a theory on thought experiments presupposes a theory on possibilities. The effect of this and of the fact that they have a wider range of application than thought experiments will be that possibilities will re...
متن کاملActual Causes and Thought Experiments
Four theories proposing determinate relations of actual causation for Boolean networks are described and applied to 16 cases. All four theories are founded on the idea that actual causation is based on results that appropriate experimental interventions would produce. They differ in their accounts of the relevant kinds of experimental interventions. The more complex theories are motivated by tr...

The Hamiltonian of classical anti-de Sitter gravity is a pure boundary term on-shell. If this remains true in non-perturbative quantum gravity then i) boundary observables will evolve unitarily in time and ii) the algebra of boundary observables is the same at all times. In particular, information available at the boundary at any one time t1 remains available at any other time t2. Since there i...
متن کاملSelf-government in multi-agent systems: experiments and thought- experiments*
This paper reports on research in self-modifying protocol games. A selfmodifying protocol is a set of instructions, rules, or conventions, that can be changed by the systems that communicate with the help of that protocol. The concept is expected to be of great importance for the next generation of intelligent distributed computer systems, such as DPSs, and MASs. This paper tries to show by exa...
متن کاملThought Experiments and Imagery in Expert Protocols
This paper focuses on case studies from think-aloud protocols with expert scientists solving explanation problems in which they appear to make predictions for novel systems they have never seen by “imagining what will happen” or “running” the system in their heads. Nersessian [2002] has proposed, based on her reading of historical records of investigations in scientific work such as Maxwell’s w...
